Grotto for Mona

2017

18’ x 16’ x 20’

Permanently installed in Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, Tasmania.

Polished aluminum; 20 low-resolution video displays; LED lights and electronics; fireproof upholstery; hand-blown glass flowers populated with mercury silvered plate glass; and mercury silvered mirror.

Grotto for Mona features a meditative cavern inside a stone tunnel. There, blown-glass flowers and polished aluminum reflect small low-resolution videos of catastrophic weather and geological events. In an environment where time becomes immaterial, a 36-channel lighting composition traces patterns and movement to stimulate neural pathways. The resultant experience allows the viewer a unique, individual journey within the context of a shared spectacular experience.
